Bronze; black lacquer, gold-foil and abalone shell (lac-burgauté); with a flat lip, foot and foot rim; decorated on each main side with a foliate panel, one with a young woman, carrying a cup on a tray, in a garden setting with bamboo, a bird in flight above her and a low trellis fence behind, and on the other with a butterfly in flight beside a flowering shrub growing behind a bamboo trellis fence, the surrounds with formalized floral scroll, the neck and foot with different formalized floral designs, the bronze foot inscribed in seal script 乾隆年製 Qianlong nian zhi (‘Made during the Qianlong period’), the lip and inner neck also bronze suggesting a bronze base to the lacquer.
